Job Profile:
This is an 8 month contract position (May to December) for current or recent university students. There is a possible opportunity for a contract extension beyond the 8 months.
This position is part of Petro-Canada’s Fuels Technology Team working on fuel additive optimization. This will involve many aspects of laboratory work including but not limited to, the collection of samples, blending of additives, testing of products, data collection and analysis.
In Stage 1 of this project, current production samples will be collected to ascertain optimal levels of select additives with various blends. Stage 2 of this project involves coordinating the collecting of field samples originating from across Canada and testing to determine current performance characteristics.
Optimization of additive levels and performance characteristics through the fuel distribution network will allow the Team to make knowledgeable decisions on effective and efficient use of resources. This position is a strategic part of that decision making process. Here is where field samples are converted to usable information and that information is made available to all Team members.
Qualifications:
The candidate must be available for the entire term (8 months):
- Student in the area of Laboratory Technology
- Background in petroleum or related technology preferred.
- Strong capabilities at the bench (sample prep) – is also tidy and organized.
- Ability to do near trace and trace analysis – attention to detail
- Must be able to work safely and securely.
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team
- Knowledge of QA/QC principals and control charts an asset.
- Good writing skills (English)
- Organized with excellent time management skills
- Strong computer skills including but not limited to Excel & Word.
The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the chain of custody of the samples from the time of receipt in the lab to when the final data is recorded.
More specifically these are:
- Sample receipt and cataloguing as per established procedures.
- Sample preparation for analysis using Standard methodology.
- Calibration of the instruments as per established practices.
- Control charting and statistical quality control of methods used.
- Data handling and analysis where required.
- Data recording and entering.
- May be required to troubleshoot analytical problems with the help of other team members.
- Preparation of monthly, quarterly and final reports.
