Job Description
 
This position is an excellent development role for people desiring “Commercial” experience with frequent interactions with the Heavy Products traders.  Commodity focus includes fuel oil, bunker fuel, various coke grades, asphalt and sulfur. Provide market analytical support for the Heavy Products trading group within Commercial S&TA. 
 
Specifically:
 
  • Monitor and report on fuel switching economics in the US and Europe.  This responsibility requires modeling power plant dispatch decisions based on spot and forward natural gas, fuel oil, coal, emissions and power prices. 
  • Analyze supply and demand fundamentals for fuel oil, including but not limited to DOE / IEA data, refinery downtime, imports / exports, blending economics, spark spreads, shipping market rates, crack spreads and macroeconomic variables.
  • Conduct research on fuel oil related topics in order to increase the trader’s understanding of supply and demand market drivers.  Examples of these drivers include regulatory specifications changes and refinery capacity additions. 
  • Work with the traders and other market analysts to develop new models to predict market behavior. 
  • Monitor spot and forward arbitrage relationships between major market hubs. 
  • Provide routine market updates describing news and analysis pertinent to the fuel oil markets worldwide.  This update should be a synthesis of market intelligence summarizing the important data from a range of publications, news sources and original work.   
  • Develop relationships with key personnel in COP’s other trading centers: Singapore and London.  Integrate this global view into routine analysis. 
  • Provide ad hoc analysis as needed for the Sulfur, Petroleum Coke and Asphalt groups. 
  • Create and validate new data requirements; support relationships with existing vendors and provide updates on new releases/reports to Heavy Products group
  • Attend gasoline, distillate, NGL and crude weekly market analysis meetings and provide market recap on each commodity at the weekly Heavy Products meetings.
  • Provide ad-hoc and routine market analysis to top management including but not limited to the quarterly CEO presentations, Commercial Market Review and the monthly STOP price forecast meetings.
  • Provide market direction and price forecasts to the annual long range price plan in addition to any annual reforecast which may be required.
 
Qualifications
 
  • Legally able to work in the U.S. for an extended period without restrictions.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Economic, Engineering or Business
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access, statistics and developing economic models.
