Reporting to the Manager - Operations Improvement, this position provides production operations optimization engineering support across the Canadian Oil and Gas Division's (COG) Production Operations. This position offers the opportunity to: interact with management throughout multiple Divisions, be a key player in the emerging critical issue of greenhouse gas emissions, and lead multi-disciplinary teams/task forces.
The Optimization Engineer will work closely with the Operations teams in each respective area to not only develop and maintain a portfolio list of ongoing and potential optimization opportunities, but also to track, report and present results on all operations optimization initiatives. The scope of the mandate is not limited to normal production optimization and OPEX reduction initiatives, as a primary focus will also be placed on Eco Efficiency opportunities (e.g. reducing greenhouse gas emissions through optimizing facility efficiencies, reducing fuel gas consumption, capturing vent gas, etc.). Optimization opportunities tend to be large numbers of very small project,s and therefore will generally be managed by the Business Unit teams, with support from the Optimization Engineer. However, where it makes sense, the Optimization Engineer will manage projects for certain large Divisional level initiatives.
This role will also research and recommend ways to leverage new technologies and equipment (e.g. Geothermal, heat recovery, solar technologies, etc.). You will be engaged in and required to make recommendations to improve and/or develop systems, tools and processes that support operational business decisions (e.g. improving OFM usage in the Division, developing economic analysis tools for field use, and working with Corporate to develop economic analysis methodology - such as how to value CO2 reductions).
You will be expected to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, successes, opportunities, best practices and standards not only between COG Business Unit Operations, but also by working with and engaging other Divisions, such as Health, Safety, Environment & Social Responsibility (HSE&SR), Technical Operating Services (TOS) and IT.
This position is eligible for [Company] Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 40 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
· Maintain an optimization opportunity portfolio list, including evolving Eco Efficiency opportunities. Develop and define appropriate production performance/optimization metrics, gather data, and develop a reporting system to provide optimization performance updates to COG management. Perform analysis on data where required to help clarify and define opportunities. From time to time, you will be required to present an update of this information to senior management.
· Assist in the preparation of recommendations for applications of optimization/process changes including the development of the scope definition, benefits analysis, cost estimate and project schedule. Provide specialized expertise and interpretation where required.
· Manage certain project initiatives from inception to completion. In some cases, act as a task force or group leader to pull multi-disciplinary project teams together as required.
· Review and research new and applicable technologies. Exercise a very high degree of ingenuity and originality in devising practical and economical solutions.
· Make recommendations to improve and/or develop systems, tools and processes that support operational business decisions (e.g. OFM, economic tools).
· Develop knowledge and expertise in key regulatory areas that pertain directly to Eco Efficiency (such as Directive 60: Unmeasured Fuel Flare & Vent; emerging federal air emission regulations; Alberta large facility emitters; and any others that may drive Eco Efficiency optimization projects).
· Interface on a routine basis with stakeholders in field Operations through regularly scheduled meetings (including field visits, Web Ex meetings, etc.).
· Participate in frequent interaction and exchange with other divisions such as HSE&SR, TOS and IT.
· Transfer knowledge, opportunities, best practices and standards across business units and divisions.
Education/Experience Requirements:
· BSc. Engineering or Engineering Technology Diploma;
· P.Eng. or CET certification or equivalent;
· 5+ years' experience in petroleum engineering and technology;
· Ability to prioritize and execute multiple work requests;
· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with and/or lead multi-discipline teams;
