Duties:
  • Reporting to the District Manager, the Engineer provides independently or in conjunction with other employees a wide variety of professional engineering services required for the coordinated day-to-day activities in the delivery of Departmental programs.
  • The Engineer performs duties as a specialist in the environment and environmental health field and has responsibilities for environment and environmental health protection within their district and at times the region and province.
  • The position requires extensive contact with professional and technical staff within the office and department as well as with other departments, governments, academic institutions, industries and the general public.
  • The Engineer is responsible for advising, consulting, supervising, planning and coordinating all aspects of engineering plans, policies, procedures and programs.
Key responsibilities include:
 
1) In coordination with district staff, participates in the application review and environmental assessment processes through the review and analysis of engineering reports, proposals, plans and specifications on projects with environmental and environmental health implications.  Drafts terms and conditions for such projects.  Examples include industrial and mining facilities, watercourse alterations, municipal water, sewage and solid waste infrastructure.
 
2) Reviews the design, assists in the design and designs complex on-site sewage disposal systems, assessments of land suitability for subdivision development and for individual lots in subdivisions.  Evaluates the design and site selection for various facilities such as central water supply treatment and distribution systems, sewage collection treatment and disposal, solid waste disposal, and complex industrial processes.
 
3) Ensures compliance with Departmental legislation through the review of data submitted as a requirement of approvals or the department’s programs.
 
4) Coordinates and oversees special projects and inspection staff as needed.
 
5) Initiates and prepares technical guidelines, policies and regulations regarding environmental and environmental health issues.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with six years related experience. Must be registered with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of departmental legislation, regulations, standards; as well as demonstrated ability to interpret regulations, policies and analytical reports.
  • A working knowledge of industrial and construction processes, soil, industrial and municipal waste management systems, hydrology, geology, toxicology, biology, laboratory practices, chemistry including chemicals and their hazards is required.
  • Strong communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, leadership, management, and sound judgement skills are essential.
  • Experience working within both private sector and government is considered an asset.
  • Daily access to a motor vehicle is essential as travel is required within the province.

  • Classification Level: PR17
  • Salary Range: $2,404.32 to $2,823.85 bi-weekly
